Carraizo and Las Curias Dam-break Flooding Assessments
Hydronia developed for Puerto Rico Aqueducts and Sewer Authority two-dimensional dam-break flooding models for Carraizo and Las Curias Dams using RiverFlow2D. The project done in with Torres-Rosa Consulting Engineers, included evaluation of flood conditions downstream the dams in the event of a partial loss of the dam. The flood analysis has been requested by the Puerto Rico Dam Safety office. The results of the analysis supported elaboration of the dam Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) defining the courses of action of the concerned agencies in a dam failure event. The study provided guidelines to deal with three different scenarios of emergency associated with dam failures.
Sabinas Tailings Dam-break Assesment
Hydronia evaluated flood hazard downstream the Sabinas Tailings Dam in Mexico, in the event of a partial breach of the dam. Since the state of tailings in the dam is uncertain and properties can vary from those of a dry granular material to those of a wet hyperconcentrated mix of solid and water, it was required to use a model capable of accounting with different formulations for non-Newtonian flows. Hydronia engineers used RiverFlow2D MD module to simulate various scenarios to support the Risk Assessment Study performed by Clifton Associates LTD/ Natural Environment S.C. office in Guadalajara, México.
